Quick Overview

McCord 'D-bail' M-2 steel shell with Capac liner. The steel shell is a repaired D bail. Both bails have broken off and were replaced by steel rings that were brazed to the steel shell. The 'feet' of D bails can still be seen and the spacing makes it clear this was an actual M-2. The 11 row weave OD3 shade chinstraps were sewn to the D bail in a typical rigger fashion. The buckle is the flat brass type. The steel shell seems to have a faint camo pattern. The heat stamp is barely visible but there seems to be a 'C'.
The Capac liner features green coated A washers and cotton suspension. The headband and neckband are also of the cotton type. The leather chinstrap has green coated steel roller buckle and is marked on the reverse.
Both the steel shell and liner have the initials F.K.S. printed in them. The helmet belonged to Frederick K. Sutten, ASN 33574787 who enlisted on March 4, 1943. Original M-2 steel shells are extremely rare. This a chance to add such a gem to the collection. M-2 were notorious for problems with the bails and this shell is no exception. It was repaired and re-used. The helmet as an awesome patina and it is obvious it saw a lot of action. Also there are some odd spots that may have had unit markings. The fact this helmet is ID-ed makes it perfect for further research. This helmet has been in my collection for a long time but its time for a new home. View the many photos.
